The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has cautioned against the proliferation of fake COVID-19 products.

NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Moji Adeyeye said the agency had discovered fake chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine circulating across the country.

Speaking during a Wednesday webinar in Lagos State, Adeyeye also revealed that fake face masks and hand sanitizers are in circulation.

She clarified that this had been found during COVID-19 medical products post-marketing surveillance.

The NAFDAC boss said: “Post-marketing monitoring is a part of NAFDAC. We stepped up because we knew that for us companies were changing formula and formulae.

“We see Chloroquine falsified without the active ingredients in it. We have also had fake sanitizers and masks, of course, which we have to deal with regulatory-wise.

“Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are just some of the therapeutics that Nigeria uses only for clinical trials. We started with chloroquine, and then came in Hydroxychloroquine.

Recall that Nigeria’s Standards Organization, SON, had urged Nigerians last month to be wary of under-standard hand sanitisers.

SON revealed that genuine hand sanitizers have alcohol which the user can perceive.
