Last winners of the competition in 2016, the Old Trafford giants have reigned supreme in the world’s most famous cup competition 12 times and will be gunning for a lucky 13 this season.

Having slipped away from Premier League contention already, United have also been eliminated from the Carabao Cup – although they have sealed Champions League progression.

It means that Rangnick only, realistically, has two opportunities to pick up silverware as interim manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked after three years at the helm and – after reaching the Europa League showpiece last season – United were unable to win a trophy during his time. The double Carabao Cup and Europa League win under Jose Mourinho in 2017 remains the club’s most recent success.

United have been drawn against Liverpool great Steven Gerrard’s new club at Old Trafford in the New Year.

The third round sees all 44 teams from the Premier League and the Championship enter the competition and join the 20 sides from League One down to non-league who have made it through.

Ties are set to be played between Friday, January 7 and Monday, January 10 in 2022 with TV scheduling governing when and what time games will be played.

Full details on when United will take on the Villans will be confirmed in due course.
