The Environmental Health Officers Association (EHOAN) has reported that the use of Automated Teller Machines ( ATMs) from banks in Nigeria was a source of coronavirus transmission to the population.

Taiwo Awonuga, chapter president of EHOAN Lagos, raised the alarm in a Friday interview with Nigeria News Agency (NAN) in Lagos.

Awonuga urged the Presidential Task Force (PTF) to pressure banks to open more cash dispensing outlets immediately to avoid the spread of the virus.

Awonuga lamented that at many points of ATMs across the world , social distancing was being ignored.

He called on financial firms to ensure that their clients follow all safety guidelines.

Health officials have urged banks to streamline their facilities according to from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

“The rat-race that is taking place in many ATM outlets is not ideal for battling the pandemic ‘s communal transmission. People line up in the sun despite their body’s sweat and droppings.

“It also calls for a change of attitude on the part of banks and customers if we have to stop the coronavirus spreading population, particularly in the suburb where there are few ATMs but crowds attracting.

“The misunderstanding at ATM points in the country is a regular sight because people need money to cater for daily needs. They lose their guard in the zeal to get cash, and get infected with vectors around them,’ he said.
