In recent days, the Government of Nigeria has given reasons for the rising death cases.
The government is concerned that the number of deaths due to the dreaded COVID-19 could have risen after the virus entered Nigeria.
FG noted that the rise in reported death cases could be attributable to the fear of some Nigerians visiting hospitals or health workers who for fear of contracting Coronavirus refuse to attend patients.
This was the presidential task force’s stance on Friday at COVID-19 as expressed by health minister Dr. Osagie Ehanire.
He said the practice of treating routine cases, due to fear of the dreaded virus, has been reduced by some.
“As a result, we are worried that some deaths may not have been directly related to the coronavirus. If a person can not go to a hospital to get help because of the fear of coronavirus or doctors who refuse to attend to such people, “he added.
The Minister further explained that the latest statistics from the National Health Management Information System (NHMIS) shows that Out-Patient visit dropped from 4 million to about 2 million, Antenatal visits from 1.3 million to 655 thousand, Skilled Birth attendance from 158,374 to less than 99,000, while immunization services dropped to about half.
“All of these will have undetermined implications which ideally will be resolved by the lockout easing. However, we also need to balance the downside of lightening the restrictions with a mutual commitment, not only to comply with preventive and prophylactic advisories, but also to inspire family, colleagues, neighbors and customers to do likewise, “he said.
