COVID-19 Patients Can Be Discharged Without Testing Negative – NCDC

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said there is no longer a need for a conclusive laboratory test to discharge a patient, because symptomatic patients can discharge earlier than usual after they have started showing symptoms of the disease-fever and respiratory symptoms.

Asymptomatic patients will now also be discharged 14 days after their first positive test to the virus, according to the NCDC Director-General, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu.

This is based on new data from Singapore that shows that RNA detected after 10 days is no longer infectious as viral culture does not cultivate any viable viruses.

These patients are therefore being released but recommended to begin self-isolation at home one week after discharge.

According to him: “New science has emerged regarding the duration of individual patients’ infectivity. It has led to new clinical guidelines being issued at the WHO.
