In a significant development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has formally received defectors from the Labour Party, including Hon. Brian Odey, representing Yala State Constituency 1 in the House of Assembly, and Hon. Martins Achadu, representing Yala 2 State Constituency.
This move is seen as a strategic boost to the APC, amidst the ongoing leadership tussle within the Labour Party.
The defection ceremony took place over the weekend, with Hon. Brian Odey joining the APC in Yahe Ward of Yala Local Government Area. He was welcomed by the ward chairman, who presented him with a copy of the party constitution and a bunch of broom, symbolizing the APC ¹ ². Hon. Martins Achadu also officially defected to the APC in the Ijiraga ward.
Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, described the defections as a “strategic decision” for the APC, highlighting the lawmakers’ experience and passion for their constituencies. “Brian’s arrival is not only a personal joy for me, but it is also a victory for the APC. His dedication and commitment to his constituents will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of our party,” Ayambem remarked.
The Labour Party’s internal conflict has led to the loss of key members, with both factions, led by Ogar Osim and John Ushie, vying for control. Despite this, both factions have expressed readiness to field candidates for the upcoming Council elections on October 25, 2024. The APC’s gain is seen as a significant blow to the Labour Party’s prospects in the state.
Hon. Brian Odey praised Governor Prince Bassey Otu, stating that he has “changed the narrative” in Cross River State. Odey commended the governor’s efforts in reducing insecurity and transforming the state. The APC’s leadership and Governor Otu’s influence have been instrumental in attracting defectors and strengthening the party’s presence in the state.
