The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to converge in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from October 6 to 11, 2024, for the ECOWAS Food and Cultural Festival.
This event aims to address the pressing security challenges hindering farming and agricultural production across the region.
According to Felix Ihonre, Director-General of the ECOWAS Food and Cultural Festival, the event will bring together key stakeholders from the food security and security sectors to propose solutions to regional challenges. “Nigeria, as the host, stands to benefit significantly in areas such as tourism, sustainable development, cultural integration, poverty alleviation, youth employment, and women in agriculture,” Ihonre stated.
Ihonre emphasized that curbing violence in communities will enable farmers to work without fear of harassment, leading to sufficient and affordable food availability. “We are engaging all sectors of the economy to ensure synergy among key players addresses issues of insecurity, hunger, malnutrition, and violence in agricultural areas,” he added.
The event will feature a range of activities, including:
– _Golf Tournament_: Promoting sports and cultural exchange among participants
– _Train Carnival_: Showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage
– _Miss ECOWAS Beauty Pageant_: Highlighting traditional costumes and beauty of ECOWAS countries
– _Forum for Men and Youth_: Fostering dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders
Ekpa Francis from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) expressed support for the festival, citing its alignment with President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, recognizes the value of this program for Nigeria,” Francis said.
The festival is expected to welcome delegates from 16 ECOWAS member states, international delegates, heads of state, and government officials to Abuja and Uyo. With its focus on peace and development, the ECOWAS Food and Cultural Festival promises to be a pivotal moment for regional cooperation and progress.
