Renowned singer, Seun Kuti, has sparked controversy in the Nigerian music industry by querying the sources of wealth among his colleagues.
During a recent Instagram Live session, Kuti expressed skepticism about the legitimacy of some artistes’ wealth.
“I have been touring for over 20 years, and I’m only just building my first house. Where is the music money coming from? Musician never get two songs, he don buy Lamborghini and G-wagon. Where’s this music money coming from?” Kuti asked.
Kuti’s comments contradict recent boasts from Nigerian artistes about the music industry’s lucrativeness. Rapper Shallipopi claimed that his financial breakthrough came after dropping a few hits, while singer Portable asserted that the music industry offers more wealth than rituals, fraud, and football combined.
Experts argue that the music industry’s financial landscape has changed, with streaming platforms and international collaborations increasing earnings. However, Kuti’s concerns highlight the need for transparency and authenticity in the industry.
Fans and fellow artistes have taken to social media to debate Kuti’s comments. Some defend the industry’s profitability, while others applaud Kuti’s honesty.
