The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has proposed two landmark bills to expand the National Identity Management Commission’s scope and introduce taxation for foreigners living and working in Nigeria.
The amended National Identity Management Commission Act would allow foreigners with taxable presence or income in Nigeria to obtain a National Identification Number (NIN). This move aims to broaden the tax base and enhance revenue generation.
The proposed Economy Stabilisation Bill would enable taxation of expatriates and income-earning immigrants. Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, explained that foreigners would be registered and issued NINs for tax purposes.
A third bill seeks to amend the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Act, allowing payments in Naira instead of dollars. This change aims to promote Nigeria’s national currency and reduce dollarization in the economy.
