Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was forcibly removed from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) premises in Benin by Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Frank Mba.
Obaseki arrived at the INEC office around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday but was escorted out by police hours later. The removal came after protests led by Dennis Idahosa, running mate to APC’s Monday Okpebholo, demanded Obaseki’s exit.
As Obaseki was led out, mobile policemen shouted, “Leave, leave.” APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, condemned Obaseki’s presence, stating, “He’s not a candidate. He has no reason to be here,” labeling it an “abuse of office.”
Protesters, repeatedly banging on the gate, were prevented from entering the premises. DIG Mba intervened, arriving with his team and approaching Obaseki.
Obaseki had gained entry under the cover of night, sitting near the Edo REC’s office where results were being collated.
This dramatic incident highlights tensions surrounding the Edo State elections.
