As the Edo State governorship election draws near, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies are intensifying preparations to ensure a smooth and credible process.
The election, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024, has 17 political parties vying for the top spot, with Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party emerging as leading contenders.
*Election Materials Deployment*
INEC has confirmed the arrival of sensitive materials, including ballot papers and result sheets, in Edo State via Benin Airport. These materials have been transported to secure storage facilities under tight security. The commission is set to deploy over 5,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS) and other sensitive materials today.
*INEC’s Preparations*
INEC is gearing up to ensure a seamless electoral process across the state’s 4,519 polling units and 211 collation centers. The commission has increased its financial support to transport unions for election logistics and engaged with stakeholders, including political parties, civil society groups, and community leaders, to ensure transparency and inclusivity.
*Security Measures*
The Nigeria Police Force has deployed 35,000 officers to Edo State, with an additional 8,000 personnel expected to join from other security agencies. The force has also deployed drones, helicopters, and other equipment to forestall any untoward incidents during the poll. DIG Frank Mba will lead the police team, with Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police posted to senatorial districts and local governments.
*Airlifting of Election Materials*
The Nigerian Air Force has commenced airlifting election materials to Edo State to ensure timely and secure delivery. This collaboration between the NAF and INEC aims to facilitate logistics and ensure a peaceful election process.
