The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reaffirmed that the Federal Government will decide on the new allowance for corps members following the approval of the N70,000 minimum wage.
In an exclusive interview with newsmen on Tuesday, NYSC’s acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, clarified that the scheme awaits directives from the relevant government sector.
This comes after speculation surrounding the increased allowance for corps members, sparked by President Tinubu’s signing of the new minimum wage bill into law on July 29, 2024.
The NYSC had earlier debunked a purported message circulating online, claiming corps members would receive N70,000 and advising them to upgrade their bank accounts.
“The attention of National Youth Service Corps management has been drawn to misleading information circulating in the media regarding payment of N70,000 minimum wage to corps members and the directive to upgrade their accounts. This is an absolute falsehood which is far from the truth.”
Embu reiterated that the NYSC has not received any directives from the government regarding the new allowance. “I don’t know how much the Federal Government will pay the corps members… it is a decision of the Federal Government, not the NYSC.”
