The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent increase in the pump price of petrol, describing it as “thoughtless” and a further blow to the already suffocating economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately reverse the latest increase in fuel price to save the country from further socio-economic challenges. Ologunagba said, “Nigerians cannot bear fuel price increases worsening the effect of suffocating economic hardship that they currently face.”
The PDP’s publicity secretary described the action as “anti-people” and a show of unconcern to the agonies of millions of Nigerians, who could no longer afford their daily meals, medications, and basic support for families due to the high cost of living. He noted that the majority of Nigerians lived below the poverty line, and businesses were collapsing daily as the Naira now exchanged for over N1,600 to a Dollar with over 34 per cent inflation rate.
Ologunagba argued that with a deft, transparent, and innovative management of resources and national refining capacity, petrol should not sell for more than N250 per liter in Nigeria. He said, “Our Party restates that with a deft, transparent and innovative management of resources and national refining capacity, petrol should not sell more than N250 per liter in Nigeria.”
The PDP has called for greater transparency in the management of the petroleum sector, urging the government to take decisive steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. The party’s rejection of the fuel price hike is a clear indication of its commitment to the welfare of the Nigerian people.
