US Vice-President and Democratic nominee for the forthcoming presidential election, Kamala Harris, has condemned the gun violence at Apalachee High School in Georgia State, describing it as a “senseless tragedy”.
A 14-year-old suspected shooter opened fire on students and teachers at the school on Wednesday, killing at least four persons. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, nine other persons, including a teacher and eight students, were hospitalized after the incident.
Reacting to the incident, Harris took to her official X handle, saying, “Today, Doug and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short by gun violence at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Our hearts are with the students, teachers, and families impacted by this shooting, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement on the scene.”
Harris emphasized the need for action to end gun violence in the US, stating, “This is a senseless tragedy — and it does not have to be this way. We must end the epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all.”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for stricter gun control laws in the US. The Apalachee High School community is in mourning, with counseling services being provided to students and staff affected by the shooting.
