The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, has been postponed indefinitely due to increasing tension between former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and the PDP Governors Forum.
The crisis began when the PDP governors took sides with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that he should be recognized as the leader of the PDP in Rivers State. Wike, who has been at odds with Fubara, warned the governors to stay out of Rivers State matters or he would ‘put fire’ in their states.
The PDP Governors’ Forum slammed Wike, describing his threat as irresponsible. They insisted that their position remained, reminding Wike that while he was Rivers governor, he enjoyed the same privilege as the party’s leader.
The PDP NWC, led by acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, proceeded with the party’s congresses in Rivers State despite a court injunction. The congresses handed control of the party structure in Rivers State to Wike. However, the PDP governors are demanding that the ward and local government congresses be annulled and fresh ones conducted.
A senior NWC member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the meeting was postponed to prevent confrontation. “They are only playing games with the party members and its future. Those present at the secretariat today are part of their team,” the source said.
