A heated debate has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the 2027 presidential election, with former Deputy National Chairman, Chief Bode George, insisting that power must return to the South.
George argued that after eight years of northern rule under President Muhammadu Buhari, the South deserves to complete eight years in office before power returns to the North in 2031. He advised ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar to wait until 2031 if he’s desperate to run again.
Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, described George’s comment as insensitive and premature, stating that Atiku’s focus is on addressing the plight of Nigerians under the current administration.
George emphasized that the PDP’s constitution and political reality demand a southerner in office from 2023 to 2031. He questioned Atiku’s ambition and urged him to follow President Joe Biden’s example by stepping aside for younger southerners.
George advocated for fairness, equity, and respect for the PDP constitution, warning against actions that could destroy the party and the country. He emphasized the need for a southerner to lead the battle against the APC in 2027.
