The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing internal turmoil, with its 2023 Kogi State governorship candidate, Dino Melaye, alleging that the party has been commercialized and privatized.
Melaye, a former Kogi West Senator, took to his X handle to express his discontent, stating, “End of the road for PDP as Damagum, Bature, and Anyanwu irredeemably destroyed the party… PDP is now once upon a time.”
Melaye accused the acting national chairman, Iliya Damagum, national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and national organizing secretary, Umar Bature, of destroying the party. His comments come amid allegations by PDP lawmakers in the House of Representatives against Damagum and Anyanwu, who they accuse of sabotaging the party.
Damagum responded to the criticism during the inauguration of the PDP National Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committees in Abuja, stating, “Nobody can intimidate me into resigning… Those calling for my resignation are only enhancing my popularity.”
The PDP is grappling with internal conflicts, with some members calling for Damagum’s resignation. The party’s relevance in Nigeria’s political space is being questioned, with Melaye asserting that the PDP has lost its way.
