President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) in an acting capacity, pending Senate confirmation.
Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, taking over from retired Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who attained the mandatory retirement age of 70 on August 22.
The swearing-in ceremony marks the beginning of a new era for the Nigerian judiciary, with Justice Kekere-Ekun expected to bring her wealth of experience and expertise to bear in leading the country’s judicial arm.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment is in an acting capacity, pending confirmation by the Senate, as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.
As the new CJN, Justice Kekere-Ekun faces the challenge of leading the judiciary in a rapidly changing legal landscape, with pressing issues such as judicial reform, access to justice, and the rule of law awaiting her attention.
