The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is detained by the Nigeria Police.
This comes after Ajaero was invited by the police over allegations of terrorism financing.
The NLC held an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at its headquarters on Tuesday morning to discuss the police invitation. The NEC resolved that Ajaero should honor the invitation but sought an extension of time through their legal adviser.
Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, Deputy President of the NLC, directed workers to be on standby for further directives in case of any eventuality. “As a committed labor center, we will honor the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization, but we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time,” he said.
Sani warned that if Ajaero is arrested, workers will down tools immediately. “In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership,” he added.
The NLC’s stance has set the stage for a potential showdown with the police, as the labor union vows to protect its leader’s rights and interests.
