The Anambra State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has vehemently opposed the proposed local government election scheduled for September 28, citing hasty amendments to the state electoral laws.
At a press conference, the state working committee announced its decision to head to court to contest the amendments, describing them as “obnoxious clauses” in the hastily revised laws.
The party alleged that Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo is under intense pressure to conduct the election before October 2024 or risk losing monthly local government fund allocations to a holding account, as ruled by the Supreme Court.
Labour Party stated that it will only participate in the election once the legal issues are resolved and the necessary corrections are made, without prejudice to the outcome of the judicial proceedings.
The party also expressed shock that the State House of Assembly did not make budgetary provisions for the proposed council election, further fueling their opposition to the hurried process.
