Nigerian aviation workers have announced plans to stage a nationwide protest on August 21, 2024, against the Federal Government’s continued deduction of 50% from the internally generated revenue of key aviation agencies.
In a letter titled “Save Aviation From Collapse,” the unions expressed their frustration with the government’s refusal to discontinue the deductions, despite their efforts. The affected agencies include the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and others.
The peaceful protest will take place at all airports nationwide, with workers demanding the exemption of their agencies from the revenue deductions. The unions have directed all state councils, women’s commissions, youth councils, and branches to mobilize and ensure widespread participation.
The unions warned that critical safety activities are already being compromised due to financial strain, and they will not be held responsible if the aviation industry becomes dysfunctional. They emphasized that the agencies are cost-recovery organizations, not profit-making entities, and cannot survive on half of their incomes.
Preparations for the protest are underway, with unions mobilizing their members nationwide. The protest is seen as a last resort to draw attention to the plight of the aviation agencies and the potential consequences of continued revenue deductions.
