The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised the alarm over a significant surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths globally.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, WHO reported that over 775 million confirmed cases and more than seven million deaths have been recorded worldwide since the pandemic began.
According to WHO, the number of new cases and deaths increased by 30% and 26%, respectively, during the 28-day period from June 24 to July 21. This represents a significant rise compared to the previous 28-day period, with over 186,000 new cases reported across 96 countries and over 2,800 new fatalities reported across 35 countries.
WHO also reported an increase in hospitalisations and ICU admissions, with over 23,000 new hospitalisations and more than 600 new ICU admissions recorded during the same period. Among countries reporting consistently, there was an overall increase of 11% and 3% in new hospitalisations and new ICU admissions, respectively.
The WHO’s report serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by COVID-19. As the global health body continues to monitor the situation, it is essential for individuals and governments to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.
