The police in several northern states have commenced the prosecution of protesters arrested during the 10-day #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria nationwide protest.
At least 1,135 persons will be charged to court, starting from Monday, for various offences related to the protests.
In Yobe State, 108 persons will be arraigned for violating the curfew and other offences. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, stated that the suspects would face charges related to their alleged involvement in the protests.
In Kano State, 632 persons arrested for alleged destruction of property will appear in court on August 19. They were remanded by a Kano State Mobile Court last Tuesday and charged with criminal conspiracy, theft, and mischief by fire.
In Gombe State, 14 protesters were freed on Saturday by a special court, while 97 others will appear in court on Tuesday and Thursday.
The protests, which held from August 1-10, were against the rising cost of living, fuel subsidy removal, surging inflation, and government economic policies. At least 17 persons were reportedly killed, and property worth billions of naira was destroyed, leading to the declaration of curfew in five states.
