Nigerian singer, Asake, has sparked a conversation about language and music after revealing why he predominantly sings in Yoruba.
During an Instagram session with fans, the Grammy-nominated artist explained that he prefers singing in his native dialect because it makes him feel more comfortable.
Asake’s stance has raised eyebrows, with some critics questioning his decision to sing mainly in Yoruba. However, the ‘Ome Ope’ crooner remains unapologetic, saying, “I am more comfortable singing in Yoruba, it’s not that I can’t sing in English. If you fvck with me, fvck with me with my Yoruba. If not, then don’t.”
Asake’s music has gained widespread recognition, with his hit song ‘Amapiano’ earning a Grammy nomination despite being predominantly sung in Yoruba. His three albums, ‘Mr Money With The Vibes’, ‘Work of Art’, and ‘Lungu Boy’, have all showcased his preference for singing in his native language. Love him or leave him, Asake is unapologetically Yoruba and proud.
