A massive deployment of security operatives has been seen in major cities across the country as organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest prepare for a one million-man march today.
The protest, which has been marred by killings and attacks on protesters and journalists, demands a reversal of the fuel subsidy removal, an increase in the minimum wage, and an end to bad governance.
Despite the increased security presence, organizers have vowed to press on with the protest, with the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, Sanyaolu Juwon, stating, “It’s a nationwide one-million-man march. Nigerians have shown resilience in the face of violent state repression. So, I’d say, let’s meet at the barricades.”
The protest has been marked by violence, with over 40 people reported killed, and organizers are demanding compensation for the families of the deceased. The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organising Committee has also called for the dismissal of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
In Lagos, hundreds of policemen have been deployed to major bus stops and locations where the protest is expected to take place. The protest has been met with a heavy security presence, but organizers remain undeterred.
