Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that Nigeria is on the brink of explosion if urgent steps are not taken to address its numerous challenges.
He emphasized the need for “moral rearmament” among leaders and citizens to achieve progress.
Obasanjo received six members of the House of Representatives who are co-sponsoring bills on single six-year term, rotation of presidency, and governorship slots. He described the demands of #EndBadGovernance protesters as legitimate and urged the government to listen to their grievances.
Obasanjo lamented that successive governments have failed to build on his foundation, resulting in significant setbacks. He emphasized the need for change in thinking and character, saying, “We must reform our thinking and character… The real issue is ourselves. Yes, the system needs rethinking, but the character of people in government must change.”
He warned that Nigeria is taking two steps forward, one step aside, and four steps backward, and that the country needs to get it right in leadership and teamwork to overcome challenges. Obasanjo also suggested rethinking liberal democracy and adopting a consensus approach to governance.
