A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Niger State, Jonathan Vatsa, has called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his alleged remark telling hunger protesters to go ahead with their protest, saying “we shall be eating”.
Vatsa described the comment as “insensitive and embarrassing” to the ruling party, attributing it to Akpabio’s roots in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he said the culture of “eating” prevails.
The former Niger State Information Commissioner demanded an apology from Akpabio, stating, “It’s a huge error and disservice to this country to make someone like Akpabio Senate President in the APC government… The APC has been hijacked by those Nigerians were fed up with and decided to embrace ‘change’ in 2015.”
Vatsa criticized Akpabio’s 16-year tenure under the PDP, saying, “The same eating Akpabio ate for 16 years under the PDP government, he still wants to continue eating under the APC government. This is the tragedy of a nation.”
He emphasized that Akpabio’s resignation is necessary for the party to redeem its image and build confidence among Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections.
