The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the final figures for newly registered voters in Edo and Ondo States, ahead of the forthcoming off-cycle governorship elections.
According to INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, Edo State has recorded 119,206 new voters, while Ondo State has registered 58,708 individuals.
The commission clarified that these figures do not include requests for voter transfers from other states, totaling 8,847 for Edo and 3,132 for Ondo. The voter register has been updated to reflect new registrations and transfer applications within both states.
Olumekun stated, “The number of new voters for Edo State is 119,206 and 58,708 for Ondo State… These figures do not include the 8,847 applications for transfer into Edo State and the 3,132 into Ondo State from other States of the Federation.”
INEC will release the comprehensive and final register of voters for both states in the coming days. The commission has also made available detailed analyses of the new voter demographics on its website and social media channels.
The Edo gubernatorial election is scheduled to hold with 17 political parties participating, while the Ondo gubernatorial election is planned for November 16, 2024, with 17 parties also participating, but no female candidates.
