Youths in Osun State continued their protest against the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidy and devaluation of the naira, demanding a reversal of the policies.
The protest, which started on Thursday, saw the youths march through Osogbo, the state capital, accompanied by security operatives.
The protesters, who converged on Friday Park, accused the federal and state governments of inflicting hardship on Nigerians. They vowed to continue the protest until their demands were met.
After performing ablution and observing Jumaat prayers on the road, the protesters dispersed. Speaking to journalists, Wole Oladapo, convener of Nigeria for Good Governance, accused the government of misplaced priority and warned that the masses’ displeasure was building up.
Oladapo stated, “It keeps getting from bad to worse, and we seem to be at the worst now. The president removed fuel subsidy by fiat, and the entire nation has come into jeopardy… We told the federal government that you can’t rob Peter to pay Paul.”
Adetunji Ajala, Osun Coordinator of Coalition of Concern Nigeria Citizen, assured that measures were in place to ensure the protest remained peaceful.
The protesters’ demands include reversing fuel subsidy removal, stopping naira devaluation, and opening borders for food importation. They also criticized the government’s prioritization of infrastructure projects over the welfare of citizens.
