The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has imposed a $220 million fine on Meta Platforms Inc. and WhatsApp LLC for discriminatory practices and sanctionable offenses committed in Nigeria.
Acting Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Adamu Abdullahi revealed that the penalty followed a three-year intensive investigation, which found the companies guilty of denying Nigerian data subjects the right to self-determination and unauthorized transfer and sharing of personal data.
Abdullahi explained that the companies offered options to data subjects in other countries to decide whether their data would be shared or not, but not in Nigeria. He also stated that the companies shared Nigerian data across platforms without consent.
The Commission has received international recognition for its investigation and sanction, with Abdullahi highlighting the agency’s achievements in promoting fair competition and protecting consumers.
The FCCPC has implemented measures to curb price gouging, promote fair competition, and protect consumers. The agency has also reviewed the consumer education curriculum in secondary schools and introduced sensitization programs for traditional and religious leaders.
The Commission has identified common consumer complaints in the electricity industry, including exploitative billing and unlawful disconnection, and is working to address these issues.
Abdullahi reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting competition and protecting consumers, creating a vibrant economy that benefits both businesses and citizens.
