In a surprise move, Salman Idris, the lawmaker representing Ijumu/Kabba-Bunu Federal Constituency of Kogi State, has defected from the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read Idris’s defection letter on the floor of the House, citing crisis at the national level of the ADC as the reason for his exit.
Minority Whip, Ali Isa, raised a point of order, citing Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution, and called for Idris’s seat to be declared vacant. However, Speaker Abbas dismissed the point of order.
Idris’s defection is seen as a boost to the APC, solidifying its position in the House. The move may also spark further defections from the ADC amid its national crisis.
The development is expected to have significant political repercussions, with the ADC likely to feel the impact of Idris’s departure. The APC, on the other hand, will likely capitalize on the momentum to strengthen its hold on power.
