The Labour Party (LP) has issued a strong warning to those in power who are allegedly planning to illegally arrest its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The National Youth Leader of the LP, Kennedy Ahanotu, made this statement in Abuja in response to calls for Obi’s arrest by a Presidential Media Aide, Bayo Onanuga.
Ahanotu emphasized that any attempts to arrest Obi on trumped-up charges would be illegal and detrimental to Nigeria’s political climate. He stated that Obi is a peaceful politician who has asked his supporters to refrain from protests or agitation, despite the manipulation of his electoral victory.
The LP youth leader recalled that a former president made inciting statements in 2011, leading to violence and massacre, yet was not arrested. He also mentioned that the current president encouraged his supporters to fight for victory in the last election, resulting in violence in Lagos and other states.
Ahanotu dissociated Obi from any allegations and warned that any attempt to unlawfully arrest him would be an affront to Nigerian citizens who believe in a better Nigeria. He emphasized that Obi’s clear electoral victory was manipulated, but he has remained peaceful and urged his supporters to do the same.
“We will not allow any illegal arrest of our hero of democracy, Mr. Peter Obi,” Ahanotu said. “Any attempt to do so will be met with resistance from Nigerian citizens who believe in a better Nigeria.”
