The Edo State Government has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the recent violence at the Benin Airport, which resulted in the death of Police Inspector Akor Onuh and injuries to several others.
The government accused some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of masterminding the crisis.
The petition, signed by the State Solicitor General, Prof. Faith Osadolor, requested the IGP to invite the reinstated Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, and other members of his group for questioning. The government urged the IGP to ensure that those found culpable are brought to book.
The petition reads: “We write to formally express our heartfelt condolences to the Nigeria Police Force on the passing of Inspector Akor Onuh… We beseech God Almighty to comfort the Inspector General and other officers of the Nigeria Police, including the family of the departed officer.”
The violence erupted on July 18, 2024, when suspected armed political thugs invaded the airport premises, leading to the shooting death of Inspector Onuh and injuries to several others. The government’s petition is titled “Request to Investigate a Case of Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Murder, Malicious Damage to Property, Breach of Public Peace, and Assault Occasioning Harm.”
