The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced its readiness to conduct a population and housing census, pending approval from President Bola Tinubu.
This was disclosed by the NPC Federal Commissioner in Lagos State, Mrs. Saidat Oladunjoye, during an event marking World Population Day.
The census, initially scheduled for May 2023, was cancelled by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed the baton to his successor. Oladunjoye assured that the NPC has made necessary preparations and is awaiting the President’s proclamation to proceed.
The census aims to provide accurate data on Nigeria’s population, which has not been conducted in nearly two decades. Oladunjoye emphasized the importance of reliable data in achieving sustainable development goals and addressing population needs.
She also stressed the need for modern census methods using advanced technology to generate credible data. The NPC commissioner urged strengthening data institutions, adequate funding, and legislative support for timely census conduct.
The World Population Day theme aligns with the SDGs’ goal of leaving no one behind, emphasizing the need for inclusive and comprehensive data collection.
