As the 2024 US presidential election draws near, President Joe Biden is facing mounting pressure from within his own party to reconsider his bid for re-election.
According to the Washington Post, former President Barack Obama has joined the growing chorus of Democrats calling on Biden to drop out of the race.
Obama reportedly believes that Biden’s chances of winning have diminished and that the 81-year-old president should “seriously consider the viability of his candidacy.” This comes after a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump, which has sparked concerns about Biden’s age and fitness for office.
Despite these concerns, Biden has rejected calls to step aside, insisting that he is staying in the race. However, Democratic leaders such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have met with Biden in recent days to warn him that his candidacy threatens the party’s prospects in November’s election.
The 2024 US presidential election is scheduled to take place on November 5, 2024.
