The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced on Thursday that a new curriculum will be introduced in secondary schools across the country by September 2024.
Speaking at the ongoing 2024 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) policy meeting in Abuja, Mamman revealed that the new curriculum has been in the works for the past year and stakeholders will meet on August 6, 2024, to finalize the plans.
According to Mamman, the new curriculum aims to address the challenges facing secondary education in Nigeria, including infrastructural deficits, unqualified teachers, and obsolete curriculum. The minister emphasized that the implementation of the new curriculum will be a collaborative effort, involving both public and private schools.
The move comes after the National Senior Secondary School Education Commission raised concerns about the deplorable state of senior secondary schools in the country. The commission highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges facing the sector.
Mamman assured that the ministry is working tirelessly to ensure a successful implementation of the new curriculum by September 2024. The minister’s announcement has been welcomed by stakeholders, who see it as a crucial step towards revitalizing secondary education in Nigeria.
“We are working hard to ensure that a new curriculum is introduced for secondary schools by September,” Mamman said. “It is our plan that by September, this programme will be implemented in all schools, public and private.”
