Isaac Balami, a prominent aviation expert and youth activist, has made a surprise move by defecting from the Labour Party (LP) back to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Balami, who was a former National Deputy Campaign Manager for the Obi/Datti presidential campaign in 2023, announced his decision on Wednesday in Abuja.
Balami had initially left the APC in 2023 over the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket, which he strongly opposed. However, he has now reversed his stance, stating that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has proven him wrong. He praised the president’s efforts in appointing credible Nigerians and promoting equity, particularly in the Middle Belt region.
“No president has ever worked with the Middle Belt like President Bola Tinubu,” Balami said. He acknowledged that his initial decision to leave the APC was based on misconceptions, but he now sees a better party and government. Balami expressed his desire to work with the APC to “rescue” Nigeria, citing the party’s efforts to promote unity and development.
After consulting with leaders across Nigeria, the Middle Belt caucus, and his family, Balami resigned from the Labour Party and announced his return to the APC. His defection is seen as a significant boost to the APC’s fortunes, particularly among youth and Middle Belt voters.
