World football governing body, FIFA, has initiated an investigation into racist chants by Argentina players following their Copa America victory.
The chants, which targeted French striker Kylian Mbappe and included homophobic insults, were captured in a live video posted on social media by Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
FIFA condemned the incident, stating, “FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone, including players, fans, and officials.” The French Football Federation has also lodged a complaint with FIFA over the chants.
Chelsea has launched an internal disciplinary procedure against Fernandez, who has apologized for his actions. The club emphasized that it finds all forms of discriminatory behavior “completely unacceptable” and will use the incident as an opportunity to educate.
The investigation is ongoing, and FIFA’s stance on discrimination in football remains clear: any form of discrimination will not be tolerated. The incident has sparked a wider conversation about racism and homophobia in football, and FIFA’s response will be closely watched by fans and players alike.
