President Bola Tinubu is set to meet with leaders of the Organised Labour on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to discuss the new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
The meeting, initiated by the President, will be attended by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The meeting comes amid a standoff between the government and labour over the implementation of a new minimum wage. Labour is demanding N250,000, while the government has proposed N60,000.
According to Channels Television, this meeting is a follow-up to the President’s promise to send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly on the minimum wage. The promise was made during his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024.
The meeting is seen as a crucial step towards resolving the minimum wage impasse, which has been a longstanding issue between the government and labour. The outcome of the meeting is expected to have a significant impact on the welfare of Nigerian workers.
As the meeting approaches, all eyes are on the President and labour leaders to find a mutually acceptable solution to the minimum wage issue.
