A four-bedroom apartment undergoing renovation in Area 11, opposite Stanbic IBTC Bank in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, collapsed on Monday evening, injuring three persons. Fortunately, no life was lost in the incident.
According to the FCT Fire Service Director, Amiola Adebayo, the injured persons have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Adebayo confirmed that the old four-storey building was undergoing restructuring and renovation when it caved in around 8:40 pm. Excavation and evacuation of the rubble stopped at 1:30 am and will resume at 7 am on July 2, 2024.
FCT Police Spokesperson Josephine Adeh also confirmed the incident, stating that the Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, promptly responded to the scene with patrol teams to cordon off the area for possible rescue. Adeh added that National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA) and FCT Development Control personnel have taken charge of the scene for robust management.
The incident occurred around 8:40 pm on Monday, trapping many workers who were renovating the building. However, no one else is believed to be trapped in the rubble, according to workers on the ground.
