In a bid to secure the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Abia State, Mr. Obi Aguocha, has sought the intervention of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Aguocha visited the former President at his Daura country home on Saturday, marking the beginning of efforts to initiate a dialogue for a political solution to Kanu’s continued detention.
Aguocha’s Apology and Plea
In a statement issued on Sunday, Aguocha’s media team quoted the lawmaker as expressing regret over the past actions and utterances of his constituent, Nnamdi Kanu. “For the missteps, utterances, and ill gestures of the past… I am deeply sorry,” Aguocha said. He emphasized the need for a political resolution to address grievances and promote understanding and unity within the country.
Buhari’s Response
The former President commended Aguocha for his humility and dedication to his people’s cause, assuring him that his approach was welcomed.
Background
Kanu was arrested and repatriated to Nigeria from Kenya in July 2021 and has remained in detention since then, facing charges including treason. Recently, Aguocha led 50 members of the House of Representatives in signing a letter appealing to President Bola Tinubu to direct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to invoke relevant constitutional sections to facilitate Kanu’s release.
The Way Forward
The meeting with Buhari is part of a broader initiative to secure a speedy political resolution to Kanu’s detention and trial, with the aim of engendering dialogue and non-contentious approaches to resolving national issues. The statement emphasized Kanu’s willingness to embrace a new dynamic in building a united Nigeria where peace, equity, justice, and prosperity shall reign.
