A devastating boat accident has occurred in Delta State, resulting in the loss of over 30 lives, including a toddler.
The tragic incident happened at Beneth Island in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West local government area of the state.
According to eyewitnesses, the speedboat carrying passengers, who were returning from a burial ceremony, collided with a submerged log, causing it to capsize. The collision threw many passengers overboard into the water, many of whom were unable to swim and were not wearing life jackets.
Survivors and witnesses recounted harrowing moments of desperation as passengers struggled to stay afloat. The boat was traveling at high speed when the accident occurred, making it difficult for passengers to react in time.
A search and rescue operation has been launched, but the fate of the missing passengers remains uncertain. Rescue teams are combing the area where the accident happened, but hopes of finding survivors are fading as time passes.
The police are currently investigating the incident, and Bright Edafe, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta State Command, promised to provide more details of the accident. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and condolences are pouring in for the families of the victims.
