The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently rejected the idea of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
This comes after some groups, including the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and Friends of Seyi Tinubu, endorsed Seyi as a potential governor.
Hakeem Amode, the Lagos PDP spokesperson, emphasized that governorship is not a family inheritance. “Lagos will not serve him,” he said in an interview with Sunday PUNCH. Amode questioned the appropriateness of a son inheriting a governorship role from his father, stressing that “Governorship is not a gift”.
The endorsements have sparked criticism from various stakeholders, with many arguing that Seyi’s potential candidacy is a form of dynasty politics. The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has also condemned the idea, insisting that non-indigenes should not be allowed to govern Lagos State.
In response to the backlash, Seye Oladejo, spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, dismissed the conversation about the 2027 elections as premature. “It is too early to be discussing the 2027 elections,” he said, urging people to focus on supporting the current government.
Meanwhile, Joe Igbokwe, a prominent APC chieftain, has described the push for Seyi Tinubu’s governorship as a “needless distraction” aimed at bringing down President Bola Tinubu. “Ruling Lagos is not a job for amateurs,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
