The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible and transparent governorship election in Ondo State today, Saturday, November 16, 2024.
Professor Kunle Ajayi, INEC National Commissioner supervising Ondo, Ogun, and Osun States, made this assurance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in Akure, the state capital, on Friday.
According to Ajayi, INEC has completed all necessary preparations to ensure the election’s success. “We have done our own work, we are proud of what we have done, and we will not disappoint the people of Ondo State,” he emphasized. This assurance comes after INEC distributed sensitive materials to various local government areas across the state on Thursday, under the supervision of party agents, armed policemen, and commercial buses hired by the Commission.
Notably, Ajayi highlighted that all registered areas in Ondo State have received their sensitive materials, unlike the September 21 governorship election in Edo State. “I want to assure you that everything will go well. As of 3 pm, all the Registered Areas (RAs) have received their sensitive materials. The next thing is to move to the Polling Unit (PU). I toured some of the RAs this afternoon,” he added.
The police authorities have also deployed approximately 34,000 operatives to ensure the election’s security. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abiodun Alabi, disclosed that measures have been taken to prevent the infiltration of thugs or unauthorized persons during the poll. With INEC and security agencies reaffirming their commitment to a free and fair election, the people of Ondo State are eagerly awaiting the outcome of today’s governorship poll.
