In a recent interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast, Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), shed light on why he refuses to form a coalition with Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.
Sowore’s stance is clear: Obi is no different from Nigeria’s corrupt politicians, merely skilled at “packaging” himself.
Sowore emphasized that his decision stems from Obi’s past political affiliations. “Before you discovered Peter Obi, I was already running for President. All these shouts about Peter Obi… He just knows how to package. Anyone can do it,” Sowore stated. He believes that joining forces with Obi would betray his principles, particularly his vow to never support a non-performing leader who has held public office.
Sowore’s resolve is rooted in his past experiences. In 2019, while Sowore was running for president, Obi served as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate. This, Sowore argues, makes Obi an unsuitable partner. “There is no lesser evil in my book. If you are evil, you are evil. If you are good, you are good. I have a general disdain for non-performance,” he asserted.
As Nigeria navigates its complex political landscape, Sowore’s refusal to compromise on his values has sparked intense debate.
