Nigerian skit maker and actress, Kemi Ikuseedun, popularly known as Mummy Wa, has bravely shared her harrowing experience with sexual harassment in the movie industry.
In an emotional interview on Chude Jideonwo’s ‘WithChude podcast’, Mummy Wa revealed the dark side of Nollywood, where filmmakers demand sexual favors in exchange for career advancement.
“Behind the scenes, a lot of people are asking for things. They are requesting a whole lot of things that I cannot do,” she stated.
Mummy Wa recounted how she faced relentless pressure from industry insiders, seeking to exploit her vulnerability. “Where do I want to start from? Me that I’m already coming from a place where they tell me ‘this thing will not work’. How many people do I want to sleep with?”
She emphasized that even succumbing to these advances doesn’t guarantee success. “To be honest, you might actually sleep with somebody in the industry and you will still not blow with the role they will give you.”
Mummy Wa stressed that no woman is exempt from these unwanted advances. “No woman is free. No woman is immune. But I can’t do it.”
Mummy Wa’s courage in sharing her story comes after her rise to fame in 2023, following her appearance on Mr. Macaroni’s skits.
Her testimony sheds light on the industry’s darker side, highlighting the need for change and support for women facing similar challenges.
Mummy Wa’s bravery inspires others to speak out, paving the way for a safer, more inclusive Nollywood.
