President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, who died on Tuesday night in Lagos at the age of 56 after a period of illness.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s remarkable military career spanned over three decades, beginning with his enrollment in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992 and went on to serve as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.

– _Operation ZAKI_ in Benue State
– _Lafiya Dole_ in Borno
– _Udoka_ in Southeast Nigeria
– _Operation Forest Sanity_ across Kaduna and Niger States
As an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, demonstrating his dedication to professional growth and excellence in military leadership.
President Tinubu expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this difficult time. “He wishes Lt. General Lagbaja eternal peace and honors his significant contributions to the nation,” said Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his beloved wife, Mariya, and their two children. His legacy will be remembered and cherished by the nation.
