Nigeria’s national power grid suffered its 10th collapse since January 2024, leaving millions without electricity.
The latest incident occurred at 1:50 pm on Tuesday, with power generation dropping from 3,631MW to 0.00MW between 2 pm and 3 pm.
TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the partial disturbance, stating, “This followed a series of lines and generators trippings that caused instability of the grid and, consequently, the partial disturbance of the system.”
Mbah assured that TCN engineers were working to quickly restore bulk power supply to affected states. “Presently, bulk power supply has been restored to Abuja, at 2.49 pm, and we are gradually restoring to other parts of the country.”
The power outage affected hospitals, schools, and businesses across the country. Distribution companies, including Ikeja DisCo, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, and Ibadan DisCo, notified customers of the system failure.
This collapse marks the fourth in less than a month, with 93 grid collapses occurring during President Buhari’s eight-year rule and three under President Tinubu’s administration.
Nigerians are demanding a comprehensive overhaul of the power sector. Analyst Adeolu Taiwo emphasized the need for technical analysis to determine the root causes of grid collapses.
Convener of the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy Centre, Princewill Okorie, criticized the focus on distribution companies’ revenue over consumers’ rights, particularly in metering.
“Apart from vandalization, no comprehensive technical analysis has been conducted to determine the root causes of recent grid collapses,” Taiwo said.
Okorie asked, “What is the quality of materials used in building the grid? Who are the professionals building the grid?”
