Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State was thrown into chaos yesterday following the tragic death of Ariyo Monday, a student of Obafemi Grammar School, allegedly at the hands of a teacher.
The incident, which occurred on October 15, 2024, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. According to eyewitness accounts, Ariyo’s ordeal began when a teacher brought a trash can to his class and warned pupils not to break it. Ariyo jokingly replied that the dustbin was bought with the students’ money, which reportedly offended the teacher.
As revealed by activist Justadetoun in an online video, the teacher, in collaboration with the school principal, subjected Ariyo to a brutal punishment. “He was flogged with 164 strokes of the cane and made to do 162 frog jumps,” Justadetoun narrated. “Ariyo collapsed to the ground in the process.”
However, Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, disputed the claims, stating that Ariyo received 24 strokes of the cane and was asked to perform 162 frog jumps. “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday],” Odutola said.
A disturbing video clip showed Ariyo, hooked to a drip, struggling to speak from his hospital bed. The deceased’s family and community are demanding justice.
The police have commenced an investigation into the incident, with the corpse deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy. The outcome of the investigation will determine the next course of action.
Reacting to the incident, Omolola Odutola assured that the police are working to unravel the circumstances surrounding Ariyo’s death. “The investigation is ongoing, and we will ensure that justice is served,” she said.
The incident has raised concerns about corporal punishment in schools and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such tragic occurrences.
