The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has shifted its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting from October 24 to November 28, 2024, to prioritize unity and strength ahead of the Ondo State governorship election on November 16, 2024.
According to the party’s Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the postponement aims to ensure the PDP approaches the election with a united front, capable of unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Ondo State.
Mohammed emphasized the need for unity, urging members to avoid divisive utterances that could undermine efforts to strengthen the party and position it as Nigeria’s main opposition for the 2027 elections.
Mohammed publicly acknowledged Umar Damagum’s leadership as PDP Acting National Chairman, easing tensions within the National Working Committee.
The Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led Reconciliation Committee successfully resolved internal disputes within the NWC, paving the way for the party’s nation-building efforts.
Only five of the party’s 13 governors attended the meeting: Mohammed, Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Caleb Muftwang (Plateau).
“This is a PDP meeting, not a governors’ meeting. It is not a caucus meeting, but a meeting of PDP stakeholders with one agenda: to reconcile all differences. We will resist any attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. We will use our experience since 1999 to provide Nigerians with a viable alternative platform.”
